A Filipino Epic Play produced for the Midtown International Theater Festival.
"Lam-ang- journey of a hero" is an adaptation; of a play adaptation written by Mig Alvarez Enriquez . The story is originally an epic poem of the Ilocano people from the Ilocos region of the Philippines. This play is influenced by the Indian Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharta. Recited in the original Ilocano language of the pre-colonial period, the poem was passed on for generations through oral tradition. After the Spaniards arrived in the Philippines, Catholicism was so strong that even the traditional stories of the native Filipinos were Christianized. To date, no one actually knows the original story of this fascinating epic. It was first transcribed around 1640 by a blind Ilocano bard named Pedro Bucaneg.
